Hexagon AICON structured light
Hexagon AICON White Reference Targets
Select uncoded white reference dots for applicable StereoScan, SmartScan and PrimeScan structured-light workflows.

Quick answer: Many legacy Hexagon AICON structured-light scanning setups use uncoded white-on-black reference markers for registration. Their diameter depends on calibrated measuring volume, camera optics and target recognition. Do not assume these are the same as the reflective dots for Hexagon handheld laser scanners.
Use the model-specific reference table below for details. A matching marker diameter does not by itself certify scanner compatibility.

0.4 mm white dots
Matte white-on-black markers for appropriately configured small measuring volumes.

0.8 mm white dots
Candidate target size for small-to-medium fields, subject to calibration.

1.5 mm white dots
Reference dots for compatible medium structured-light measuring volumes.

3 mm white dots
Larger optical targets for approved wide-field configurations.
Premium white sheets vs. uncoated target rolls
Messpunkte offers both formats. For demanding structured-light metrology, we recommend premium matte-coated sheets. Uncoated rolls are an economical alternative for larger scanning projects when the optical workflow permits them.

Premium sheets Recommended
Available sizes: 0.2–8 mm. Premium matte coating reduces unwanted glare and helps deliver consistent optical recognition in precision metrology workflows.
Best for: inspection-grade scanning and measurement repeatability. Standard and strong adhesive choices on appropriate sizes.

Uncoated rolls High-volume alternative
Available sizes: 1.5–12 mm, including 10 and 12 mm sizes for larger measurement fields. More targets per pack typically means a lower cost per dot.
Best for: large-scale target application and volume purchases. Rolls do not have the premium matte coating found on the sheets, so confirm recognition and measurement suitability.
Choose a roll: 1.5 mm · 3 mm · 5 mm · 8 mm · 10 mm · 12 mm
Actual Shopify assortment: sheets 0.2–8 mm; rolls 1.5–12 mm. Roll adhesive options are light or strong. Current pack price and stock are shown on the product page.
Which format is right for my application?
StereoScan, SmartScan and PrimeScan are legacy structured-light systems with model-dependent specifications.

Scanner models and target compatibility
| Workflow | What determines target size | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| AICON StereoScan | Calibrated camera field and target-recognition settings | Browse white dots |
| AICON SmartScan | Measurement volume and software | View white 0.8 mm |
| AICON PrimeScan | Scanner configuration and mode | View white 1.5 mm |
| Hexagon MARVELSCAN | Retro-reflective laser targets, not ATOS-type white dots | See handheld scanner guide |
Follow the exact scanner and measurement-mode specification; where manufacturer-supported compatibility has not been established, suggestions are presented as starting points.
White-dot sizing and scanner calibration
A smaller measuring volume generally makes finer reference points visible; a larger measurement field may require larger markers. The size examples shown are illustrative and should be checked against the optical sensor, lens, calibration and inspection software. For a detailed method, read the target-size selection guide.
Do you need scanning spray, too?
Reference markers support positioning and scan alignment. ATTBLIME matting spray helps capture optically challenging surfaces. Keep markers clear of overspray so the scanner can recognize them.

Frequently asked questions
Are all Hexagon reference targets the same?
No. Structured-light AICON sensors and handheld laser scanners may require different target types.
How do I choose white-dot diameter?
Match target recognition for the calibrated measuring volume and optics. A single size is not suitable for all setups.
Can I use the ZEISS ATOS sizing table?
Its field-of-view reasoning can help narrow candidate sizes, but it is not an official AICON compatibility table.
Are coded targets the same as white uncoded dots?
No. Some photogrammetry methods use coded references, while many multi-view structured-light workflows use uncoded white markers.
Can ATTBLIME spray be used?
Yes where coating is compatible with the part and scanning workflow. Preserve the readability of reference-marker faces.
