3D Scanner Accuracy vs Resolution vs Repeatability

Quick answer: A scanner advertised with 0.02 mm resolution does not necessarily measure every dimension to 0.02 mm accuracy. Understand the specification before choosing hardware or accepting inspection results.

Practical guide for industrial scanning and optical metrology.

Accuracy: closeness to a reference

Accuracy describes how close measured geometry comes to a known or calibrated value. Ask whether the quoted figure applies to a single point, a volumetric length, or a complete assembled scan.

Resolution: level of captured detail

Resolution describes the spacing or smallest discernible features in the captured data. A dense mesh can still be dimensionally wrong if tracking, calibration, or surface quality is poor.

Repeatability: consistency

Repeatability asks whether repeated scans under the same conditions give similar results. It is important for process monitoring, but repeatedly measuring the wrong value is not accuracy.

Consider the full measurement chain

Working volume, registration, optics, surface treatment, environment, operator method, and software fitting all contribute. A sprayed layer itself may add a small offset, which can matter when tolerances are tight.

Ask for an application-level demonstration

Request a scan of a representative part, compare against a calibrated reference or CMM, and document the method and acceptance limits. For regulated metrology, follow the applicable traceable validation procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Can scanning spray affect dimensions?

Yes, any physical coating adds thickness. Use the thinnest approved layer, consult product thickness data, and assess the effect against your tolerance.

Is point accuracy the same as volumetric accuracy?

No. Local point performance and error accumulated across a larger measurement volume are different specifications.
