3D Scanner Target Compatibility Guide
Find reflective and white reference marker sizes by scanner manufacturer, model and measurement technology.

Quick answer: Handheld marker-based laser scanners often use retro-reflective 3 mm or 6 mm dots, some optical tracking modes use 12 mm or larger references, and structured-light sensors often use uncoded white-on-black dots selected by measuring volume. Always check the specific scanner model and active scan mode.
Use the model-specific reference table below for details. A matching marker diameter does not by itself certify scanner compatibility.

6 mm reflective roll
4,000-dot standard-adhesive roll for compatible handheld target-based systems.

3 mm reflective sheets
Smaller retro-reflective targets where model and mode support them.

12 mm reflective sheets
Larger dots for specific C-Track or acquisition configurations.

White-on-black reference dots
Choose uncoded matte white dots by measuring volume and resolution.
Which format is right for my application?
Typically recognize retro-reflective dots when operated in marker-based alignment modes.
Some require larger points; others operate target-free. Check the tracker mode.
Often need uncoded white reference markers matched to the calibrated field.
Dot size affects marker detection and geometric suitability; it does not determine scanner accuracy by itself.

Reusable and specialty targets
6 mm magnetic reflective targets suit appropriate ferrous components and repeat measurements, when supported by the scanner.
6 mm glueless targets provide temporary reference placement in compatible workflows.
Reusable target strips aid repeated positioning. Dots are sold separately.
Multi-face holders are a custom-order accessory; confirm base size, fit and lead time.
Do you need scanning spray, too?
Reference markers support positioning and scan alignment. ATTBLIME matting spray helps capture optically challenging surfaces. Keep markers clear of overspray so the scanner can recognize them.

Frequently asked questions
Are retro-reflective and white dots interchangeable?
No. Laser positioning and structured-light optical registration commonly use different target types.
Does a 6 mm diameter prove compatibility?
No. Recognition also depends on optical response, calibration, camera settings and scanning mode.
Can I use magnetic or glueless references?
In compatible workflows when their reference faces are recognized and remain fixed during measurement.
What should I do if my scanner is not listed?
Send us its make, model, scanning mode and existing target type. A photo of the current dots can help identify a match.
Do all scanners require targets?
No. Surface-feature alignment, external tracking and target-free systems can work without on-part reference dots.
